When you see a skater on the streets, you often see a troubled youth. I helped the Crossville Skatepark Association communicate to city officials that skaters are unique individuals with talents and dreams. I asked local skaters to create a work of art on skateboard “grip” tape, then pasted a flyer on the back of each piece. The skaters handed sent them to city council members, local businesses and community leaders to garner support. It worked. Within two years the city approved a skatepark build.
